CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin fired from ‘New Yorker’ for alleged sex act during work Zoom call

CNN chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin was fired from his day job at the New Yorker for masturbating on a Zoom video chat with coworkers.

Initial reports suggested Toobin had accidentally “exposed” his penis during the call last week between members of the New Yorker and WNYC radio, and whether that’s a weak attempt at a cover story or not the narrative had little lasting power.

Citing two anonymous sources who were on the call, Vice reported Monday night that not only did Toobin have his penis out during the election simulation call, but that he was putting it to use — if you know what I mean.

“The sources said that when the groups returned from their breakout rooms, Toobin lowered the camera,” Vice reported. “The people on the call said they could see Toobin touching his penis. Toobin then left the call. Moments later, he called back in, seemingly unaware of what his colleagues had been able to see, and the simulation continued.”

In his defense, the 60-year-old Toobin, who was playing the courts in the simulation, said he did not realize his video was on.

“I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake, believing I was off-camera. I apologize to my wife, family, friends and co-workers,” he told Motherboard.

“I believed I was not visible on Zoom,” Toobin added. “I thought no one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I had muted the Zoom video.”

Vice noted that Toobin has not tweeted since October 13, but has appeared on CNN.

And while New Yorker fired Toobin, CNN responded by granting him time off to deal with a personal issue.

“Jeff Toobin has asked for some time off while he deals with a personal issue, which we have granted,” the network said in a statement.

To that end, conservative commentator Andrew Klavan won the internet for the day when he tweeted: “[CNN] didn’t suspend him because on CNN, this is virtually his job description.”

As for CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter’s take on events, he said in a tweeted: “Jeffrey Toobin has been sidelined at a pivotal moment in the run-up to the presidential election. The reason: He exposed himself during a Zoom call with New Yorker colleagues in what he says was an accident.”

While there was plenty of mocking and guffawing over the incident, The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway was quick to note the seriousness of Toobin’s work as an analyst, highlighting a quote from him during Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s 2018 confirmation hearings.

As seen below, Toobin would suggest that Kavanaugh was unfit to babysit children.

Lest we forget, the married Toobin is no stranger to controversy, having gotten the daughter of a friend and colleague pregnant and then trying to pressure the young woman into having an abortion.

Toobin also allegedly offered her money to have another child via a sperm donor, and had to be forced to pay the full court ordered child support.

Here’s a sampling of other responses to the story, beginning with a tweet from talk radio host Larry O’Connor, who reminds us that Toobin is part of an infamous cabal who are “constantly lecturing you about your politics, values and principles.”
