HHS Sec. Azar Says Mask Resistance Problem For ‘All Western Democracies’

Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar on Sunday claimed the problem of continued resistance to mask wearing by President Donald Trump and supporters at his indoor rallies is one shared by “all Western democracies.”

In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Azar said he was at a Fort Myers, Fla., indoor rally for Trump and was unhappy that no everyone was wearing a face masks including Trump.

“I wish everybody there would’ve worn face coverings,” he said.

“For that event, masks were distributed to all who were attending… with the chairs, social distancing was maintained throughout… our advice is the same no matter what the setting,” he asserted.

Pressed why the message was so difficult for Trump to accept, Azar said the problem isn’t limited to the United States.

“I think it’s a difficult message for all Western democracies,” he said.

“We’re seeing an increase of cases [in the United States]… an explosion of cases in Europe,” he lamented.

“The ticket is in our hands,” he said. “It’s about those basic mitigation health steps… wear a face covering when you can’t be socially distancing.”

“People are tired,” Azar added. “They’ve been locked down, they’ve been isolated… hang with us. We’re so close [to a vaccine and treatments],… give us a bit more of your time.”
