Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart said Thursday he’s concerned that Joe Biden, if confirmed as president, will return the United States’ relationship with Cuba back to 2016 and earlier.
“I worry that his history will come back,” the Florida Republican said on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends.” “What he has wanted to do for almost five decades [is] betray the best allies in the United States, [like] he and Obama did in front of the United Nations with Israel and then help our enemies, help the enemies of freedom.”
Biden has tried to help legitimize the Western Hemisphere dictatorships for decades, he added, and that has been rejected by voters.
“It’s also, by the way, dangerous for the national security interest of the United States,” said Diaz-Balart.
There are arguments that if the United States doesn’t establish a presence in Cuba, then China will, but Diaz-Balart insisted both China and Russia have “been there for decades” because they were allowed in by the Castro regime.
“Hey, how about standing with the people and national security interests of the United States and not with the enemies of the United States and the enemies of the people,” he said. “Standing with these dictatorships is what Biden has done historically.”
President Barack Obama engaged the Cuban people directly in 2016, but that made it much worse for them, said Diaz-Balart.
“It gave the green light to the regime to regress and be more regressive,” said Diaz-Balart. “They had the agreement … this is not only rejected by the Cuban-American voters but all of the Cuban Americans in Congress.”
